Viking Rowing Club South Africa
A Lifetime of Fellowship
Junior Rowing 9 - 17 Years
This is a fairly new undertaking for the club which in the past has essentially concentrated on senior and masters rowing. However, the club welcomes any new young members, be they individuals, groups or schools that wish to start rowing. Junior's can get actively involved in what is a very vibrant and competitive schools and junior rowing calendar. Once joining Vikings, they will be able to participate as Vikings rowers or be able to row under there various school colours. All rowers have to register with ROWSA and fall in line with the rules of rowing when competing. With boat housing and equipment at both Roodeplaat Dam and Wemmer Pan, this is a perfect opportunity and environment to achieve your dreams. Who knows, next is Olympics.
Senior Rowing 18 - 28
Senior rowing is most competitive at this stage and is where selection is done for international competition. However, this is also the most challenging period for any oars person. Rowers are either very busy at university setting up their future or having just qualified, trying to establish there working careers along with setting up house and home. In this modern day and age, their just doesn't seem to be time for anything, though one always needs to set some time aside for R&R. With our close proximity to the city centre, early morning, midday and even late afternoon outings are quite possible. Ironically its this category in rowing we wish to build most importantly. Most of the clubs boats are rigged for sculling and so is well suited for individuals or crews to get an outing within an hour or so. Seldom is there a case of too few bow siders or too few stroke siders to make up crews. Sculling ensures all an outing in any combination of boats. 60 min / 6 laps and you can be on your way. About as much time you would spent in the gym.
